How many hours a week can AI tools save an average teacher?

There is no single answer to this question, but our users have reported saving as many as 4 hours a week on a regular basis when using Teaching AI for lesson planning, and up to 20 hours in one week (!) when planning a full year’s worth of lessons for a class. (That second number stunned us when we heard it, but then I know I have at times spent tens of hours planning a full scheme of work - so it does make sense.)

The areas where users often report finding the most time saved are in areas like:

  • Getting ideas for lesson activities and ways of increasing engagement (By just asking for a list of ideas rather than spending ages trawling Teacher Twitter and Google to find something that clicks with your style and the needs of your group.)

  • Writing lesson plans (Where a school requires them, it is often much easier to specify what you are teaching and ask an AI tool like ChatGPT or Teaching AI to draft something which you can then tweak.)

  • Drafting questions or pieces of text (For example, our ‘Reading Comprehension Text and Questions’ resource - available to Paid Tier members - can take a lesson topic or even an existing Powerpoint or PDF and use it to create a piece of text and matching questions for students to read. This may well be the resource type I find myself using the most, simply uploading an existing resource that contains the key content and then asking for a reading comprehension text and questions based on those key points!

And all that is before we get into non-planning tasks that the average teacher will spend hours each week on, including:

  • Giving students feedback on their work

  • Communicating with parents

  • Answering student questions in the classroom

At Teaching AI, we are working to add AI-powered tools to save teachers time with each of the tasks in the list above. We can’t wait to unveil what we are working on and make it available to our Paid Tier members by the end of the summer!

If you think the time savings you could make with AI-powered lesson planning tools are valuable, why not join Teaching AI as a Paid Tier member? You’ll get immediate access to 30+ lesson resource types, and can download your generated resources as a PDF or Word document with a single click. We’re constantly working on new features and resource types too, so the benefits will continue to grow over time. At just £4.99 a month, we think the cost is minimal considering the times you can save.

Remember, at Teaching AI we don’t believe that artificial intelligence is any substitute for the skills and qualities of a professional teacher: Instead, we think the benefits of AI are in freeing up teachers’ time from repetitive, time-consuming tasks so that they can apply their experience, creativity, and passion to the things that really matter. That will be different for each teacher, but I find that by using AI lesson planning tools I have more time to personalise resources for individual classes and students, and to make lessons even more engaging than they would otherwise be!
